This place is huge (one of the largest book shops in the UK). There are literally hundreds of thousands of books and they're all so well priced. It's definitely worth a visit, particularly if you're a student or book-lover.

Barter Books is an amazing place and I'm glad it exists. However, it has to be said that for a second hand bookshop it isn't particuarly cheap, with most books priced a couple of pounds more than you might expect at an oxfam shop and a good deal more than at a car boot sale too! However, the sheer size means that if you're hoping to come accross something specific such as a travel guide or an A Level revision guide you've got a lot better chance than at most places. I rarely walk out with anything but browsing is in itself very pleasurable, as you can take a walk down nostalgia lane with the old children's books or admire the first editions of modern classics. In the winter a fire blazes near the entrance and you can buy biscuits by donated to an 'honesty box', which is always heart-warming.

Barter books is the most fantastic book shop i have ever entered, the building is a converted victorian train station which gives a great sense of history whilst walking around. Now made up of several rooms, there is something for everyone, books for all ages! A model railway moves around a track above your head in the central room reminding people of the fact that the building was once a train station! The childrens section is fantastic, it has a large toy train carriage in the middle of the room which children can sit in to read, and a great collection of books from Enid Blyton to Harry Potter. Not only does Barter books sell books, but also CDs, Videos, LPs and Cassettes. There is also a small cafe where refreshments are available. Being one of the largest second hand bookstores in europe, i could easily spend a couple of hours searching around the many shelves.

This is the bigger of the Bartar books shops and i find it is on a par with heaven! It is incredible and absolutely packed with second hand books and videos/dvds. It is a lovely old building and the staff are wonderfully helpful and friendly. I could spend hours and hours in here just browsing.

I love this place, it's pretty amazing, set in an old train station, and one of the biggest book shops in Britain, it has a lot to boast about i think, its so different and has such a strangely musky atmosphere if that makes any sense! Once you're in you'll understand. It really is huge and it has some of the oldest books ever just in a glass case at the back?! It's definately worth a visit.

Located in the old victorian station in Alnwick is one of the largest second hand bookshops in britain. Its an amazing place to wander around as it is literally a library of second hand books, and you can find pretty much anything you like. They also sell second hand cds and videos, probably dvds these days too. I used to love going here as a child as it felt like an adventure wandering around the high shelves stacked with books. They also sold amazing cookies which just made it even better. If there is a better second hand bookstore in the country i'd love to see it
