Although Wikepedia can sometimes be useful for defintions .. but you should never quote anything from this site because it is generally regarded as not a very reliable website and be careful how much information you use from this site because it is not always that true!!!!

Wikipedia is useful for getting a general overview on something, however if you wanted to use wikipedia for some sort of research project or essay then you should look at the sources that have actually been used to construct the wikipedia page on that topic, to check they are reliable. NEVER quote wikipedia in a university piece of work because your assessors will not be impressed. If you are just curious about something random day to day though wikipedia is great!

Having always used wikipedia during college for research. It always has proved to be useful in finding out facts. However I have always questioned its reliability as anyone can add or modify the information in an article. Friends of mine modified an article on kebabs where it says transliterated it says also known as kebhav *bhav* a friend of theirs for a laugh and it is still there today. Apparently its not to be replied upon for university work due to this unreliability.

Silver Badger profile image
Rating - positive on 05/08/2008 by Silver Badger (57 reviews)
This is obviously an extremely popular site - this is mostly because of the range of articles available, and the fact that the articles are edited by its users. Over the years, I have found it extremely helpful, both for general interest and for my academic work. That being said, you do have to use your own judgement to assess the factual accuracy of certain articles - particular caution needs to be applied to "pop culture" articles, which are notorious for being factually inaccurate. However, this problem has been grossly overstated by the media - I would say that (as a very crude estimate) 95% of the articles can be trusted.

Another warning - don't try to cite Wikipedia as an academic reference. I stupidly did this when I was at college, and it did not look good to say the least. This is because of course the articles are not peer reviewed. However, as far as gaining a basic grounding in a particular topic is concerned, this is where Wikipedia comes into its own. Just don't trust everything it says to be gospel truth.

Wikipedia is great. I go on it all the time when needing to research.
It is useful information from Actors and Musicians to dictionary meanings and pretty much anything that comes to your head.

The search engine is very useful in the way that it shows a percentage in relevance to your search. I love this site as the simple layout is legible and the links directing to other pages are helpful too.

I use this site pretty frequently to find out facts and information often needed for giving me ideas as to what to put in college work and essays. There is an extremely large archive of data, and you are likely to find info on pretty much anything you want to know about. It is constantly being updated, which is good, so you can be pretty confident what you are reading is not out of date! Some topics however are explained it quite a lot of detail, so you might need to read through quite a lot of text to find out exactly what you are looking for.

This is a really great website for finding out information abou everything. Its all clearly set out with subtitles you can click on to go to straight to the bit you want to read. My teachers always said not to use this site (i mean they REALLY hate it!) thats because anyone can log on and write anything about anything even if its not true. However, my mate for a laught put a lie on it everyday just to see what happened and every next day it was taken off so it must be checked really accurately.

Wikipedia is the best invention for students since alcohol, and it has even been recommended by an Oxford lecturer! I use wikipedia regularly for everything from writing essays to settling disputes as to when Alan Rickman was born. It is extremely well presented and easy to use, and includes links to many other sites that are very useful for further research. Many of the pages are references and quote sources, but I would be careful about the pages that lack these. It is an excellent tool, but watch out for people changing details - I would check anything you're not sure about with an official source before quoting it in an essay.

Teachers say dont use it- but ignore them. Wikipedia is one of the best aspects of the internet- and it just keeps growing- i remember the days of going to the library to get an encyclopedia and searching for ages to get a page of jargon. This saves you so much time and it has all the information you will ever need about a subject, as well as links to other pages helping explain what you have searched for. Can be tempting to copy and paste though...

This is one of my favourite websites! You can find information about almost anything quickly and efficiently. Although anyone can write the articles on this site, they tend to be done by people who have a passion or knowledge on the subject as well as all content is moderated making it a relatively reliable source of information. Even if this does not convinced you of the reliability of Wikipedia you should use it, like I do, as a stepping stone to understand the basics of a subject from which further information from more sound reliable sources can be found. Wikipedia makes accessing information easier, quicker and encourages learning so that can't be a bad thing.

Its community based so take important information with a pinch of salt as it is uploaded by anyone who could just have easily talked rubbish over the truth.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this website. It has it's uses in that you can find information on almost anything, but it's reliability is somewhat dubious. All it takes to edit an existing article or create a new one is an account. You could just make up a load of rubbish. When I searched on the invention of skiing for coursework, wikipedia told me that it was invented by a Norwegian, and it also told me it was invented by a Scottsman, a Frenchman, and an American.

Wikipedia is a website that has a huge amount of information on things you never really need to know. People say how it is unreliable, and whilst it is susceptible to vandalism, it still needs to cite references which a reader can use to verify information. If I hear about something which I don't know what it is I will put it into wikipedia normally to learn a basic overview of it.

I have used this website a lot and I am not convinced by it. I have found that some of the information can contradict with other parts of the site, whilst other parts are completely false. However, I have to say that most of the information, and in particular on Sports, is very up to date and correct.

Even though its reliability is often attacked, for a good all-round introduction to a topic Wikipedia can't be beaten. The old-school encyclopedic writing style means they never assume you have prior knowledge of something, so if you are looking at a completely new, unfamiliar topic it will give you a firm understanding of the basics, whereas a simple google search might only come up with sites full of jargon and obscure references. I have heard Oxford tutors actively recommend using this site regularly (but of course they didn't recommend ever citing it as a source!) as even they believed it was a useful tool. Plus the famed inaccuracies and bias can provide some amusement - I liked the article on Henri Rousseau that said his paintings sold well, 'despite being shit' - I imagine some bitter art historian enjoyed finally getting the chance to vent their anger as they wrote that!

AMAZING, probably one of the best websites out there. Wikipedia has it all what ever you are searching it will have it. You could spend hours on Wikipedia, if you are researching a topic, the hyperlinks to other related topics will grab your attention. This is a well layed out website and information is usually correct. Being a wiki however some of the information could be a load of rubbish, but it is frequently checked.

JC profile image

This is an online encyclopedia with a range of applications, although I would recommend you use it more for fun or as a general guide, rather than an absolute authority on a subject which really counts for something (ie school coursework, uni projects). I have often used it in revision to quickly look up a general term, without having to resort to actually picking up a book! There is a danger that info featured is inaccurate, as it is made up of contributions by the general public. This can mean that more obscure areas of info are not brilliantly structured or slightly inaccurate - but it is improving all the time. Overall, a useful resource - but bear in mind its sources, and double check if the info seems incorrect or you are using the answer as part of assessed work.

Wikipedia is a revolutionary web-site that is homage to everything there is to know about everything, created by the everyday person. It is so easy to find out something you wanted to know and has become the default place I look for information. People put it down because they are worried that the average person will state incorrect information, but on the contrary, there is a dedicated community of people on the web-site who work hard to rectify any issues. Recommended.

One of the best resources on the internet, undoubtedly. There exists pages for almost anything - and if there isn't you can easily create one! Of course, not all of the information is accurate - it is overwhelmingly written by students with narrow outlooks, so avoid for really complicated stuff. Despite it being slammed by academics as an unreliable site to cite in essays, whenever you want information on a new topic, where do you go? Wikipedia.

Wikipedia has article entries on everything under the sun - from cosmic radiation to Deep Purple to a small high school in an unknown county to most people. It's an enormous database of knowledge created by members of the public. Yes the system is open to abuse and easy to abuse, but there're many moderators to ensure high quality of content - and many Wikipedia users are professionals or people in the know who will edit these articles to ensure accurate information.

Wikipedia does not profess to be 100% accurate and always flags articles which could be biased or which are poorly written. It's nice to see a user-based website that still has faith in the public, and this approach seems to have worked, since most Wikipedia articles are of a very high quality in my experience. I also enjoy the fact that Wikipedia has pages dedicated to particularly amusing article abuses to celebrate creativity.

Wikipedia also has sister projects such as Lyricwiki, a lyrics database, which is very useful too.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia which everyone uses and for a good reason. Wiki has information on everything and anything. If you need information on a historical figure, a certain event in history or just looking for information on your favorite actor wikipedia will have it. Great website.

You've got to love Wikipedia - for comedy or research purposes, it's up to you.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is contributed to by its members. It is, in essence, the Internet in microcosm - all the world pooling its collective knowledge to be downloaded by anyone. The problem is, the world's collective knowledge is often wrong... A quick search reveals David Beckham was an 18th Century chinese goalkeeper, and that Robbie Williams makes money by eating domestic pets in and around Stoke (all entries long since ammended). While these are obvious and intentional mistakes, far more dangerous are the well-meaning but ill informed users. There is nothing to stop a 16 year old informing the world that you really won't get pregnant if you do it standing up, or similar urban myths. I, for example, once claimed to be a founding member of the Honourable Scoiety of the Badger, as formed in 1389 by Henry V... and not, in fact, the rather grand name for my sports team dreamt up over too many pints of snakebite in 2005.

Wikipedia is simple, easy to use, and very effective for something you don't need to be certain of - in particular, it is excellent for episode guides of television programmes. When the entries can be verified, they are similarly indispensable. So continue to use it, but if it matters, verify it. I'll still use it (you didn't think I knew the dates of Henry V's reign by heart, did you?).

This is an iffy website in my personal opinion. There's a vast amount of information where you can find almost anything! It is the ideal website for a small simple school project. BUT there is a problem as people write on here. Its not run by anyone official and anyone that has the internet and that can type can show off how much they know about anything. There is a system to eliminate waffle and abuse. But still not high in my books.

This is an online encyclopedia where you can find information on virtually everything. The site is regularly updated by members of the public who can enter things, but because of this sometimes the information can be wrong. However i still use wikipedia when looking for information.

Wikipedia is a great website offering many facts about pretty much any topic. It is an online encyclopedia which is updated by members of the public, however, I have found that because of this facts are often not correct and very bias. Therefore, Wikipedia is perfect for getting information for your general knowledge but should be avoided if the data is used in a report or important piece of work (in which case most lecturers will not appreciate a reference from this site).

If you've never heard of wikipedia you seriously can't ever have done a project or essay! Has to be the most useful site on the internet, even with the dangers it has. Just remember that anyone can post anything so its not necessarily true, but in most cases it is and its always my first point of call for a bit of clarification on this or that

Wikipedia is magic - if you don't know what something means just type it into Wikipedia and you are sure to find out. As anyone can upload articles here it is often criticised for its academic integrity. They do have teams of people weasling out the lies day in day out but I wouldnt trust Wikipedia as gospel truth, nor would I refernce it in an essay - unless I wanted a third! The site is great for getting a general overview of a topic and often has useful links.

A great website at which there is articled information on basically every topic you can think of in the world. Especially useful as a research and question solving tool - but be wary that all information upon the website is true as it is written by users and not professors!

Its quite an interesting website, but you dont know if any of it is true or not! Anyone can upload facts and information to it. If you are tempted to use quotes from it in an essay, dont! If you are just looking for fun you can find some quite random stuff on there and its definately a time filler.

A really good internet encyclopedia with an abosolutely huge data base of information. Is a really cool thing to use when you are bored, and also to obtain information as a student, however, make sure not to reference this website, as it is frowned upon by academics.

This best reference material available on the web. A must when completing all my essay or uni work as it has absolutely EVERYTHING on there. Just be warned that not all the information upon this website is 100% correct so don't rest all your knowledge on it!

Although some people seem to base entire University essays on it, this is not what Wikipedia is for. Its a simple site used to check when people were born and basic stuff like that. Dont base your knowledge of everything on it.

While the academic integrity of wikipedia articles is questionable (although the references are useful) it come into its own as a source of information on films, book, music and the influences behind them. As the majority of these articles are written by fans they are full of interesting information. I also find it useful for looking some irrefutable facts! (dates formulas etc)

Very very useful website. Its absolutley jam packed with information on every topic imaginable making it great for research and for essays but some of its information can be slightly unreliable at times so i would double check it especially if you are putting it in an essay.
