Castlewellan is a real gem in County Down. The large village is situated beside Castlewellan Lake, therefore the main attraction here is Castlewellan Forest Park. The park is fantastic for families with children or dogs, and is always worth a visit to walk around and take in the outstanding views. Set between the Mourne Mountains and the sea, and very near to the seaside town of Newcastle and also to beaches such as Tyrella, Castlewellan Forest Park offers some spectacular sights and views. The park also has space for touring caravans to pitch up and stay (fees are charged). The most recent attraction to the forest park is the ''Peace Maze'' - which is a really unique feature - is a large hedge maze that visitors can have a go at navigating their way around!
The village of Castlewellan itself doesn''t have a great amount to do, other than some shops, cafes and pubs, but it is the location of Castlewellan which really puts it on the map. It has fantastic views and great access to the some of County Down''s best beaches and also to the stunning Mourne Mountains where walkers can enjoy a relaxed and senic stroll through the hills and trees, or can partake in a more challenging hike up the mountains such as Slieve Donard, and visit the spectacular Silend Valley Reservoir.
