Axminster is probably famous for two things. Carpets of course (originally founded in the town in 1775, and you can still visit the carpet factory) and the wonderful Hugh Fearnley - Whittingstall. If you are an avid fan then a visit to Axminster is pretty much on the cards. I have been recently and I loved the town but also the River Cottage Caff which serves the most delicious food and drink, all inspired by the great HFW. He also has a market shop with all free range and organic produce to die for!
Axminster itself is on the River Axe and is surrounded by some really beautiful Devon countryside. Itts a great place to base yourself and is easy to get to as it is on the main rail line to London Waterloo.
We also visited Shute Martin which is a medieval manor house and was very interesting. The great hall is amazing and the kitchen was fascinating. Apparently it is one of the best preserved medieval houses in the country. We went to Axminster museum the same day which was good and the building used to be the old police station which was fascinating.
Axminster is certainly busier than I remember it, due in no small part to HFW putting it on the map. The shops are about normal for any small town, with a few big supermarkets but also some great individual and organic shops.
