Bideford is one of those towns that locally is known for its New years Eve celebrations. Everyone but everyone takes to the streets in fancy dress and every pub and venue is packed out. The town is closed to cars and everyone crowds the harbour and the long bridge and wait for the town clock to chime midnight.
Bideford is still a working port, as well as a busy market town, and the quayside has been revamped so it all looks very new and modern and attractive. It also has a beautiful mediaeval long bridge over the river Torridge and of course it is mentioned in Kingsleys Westward Hoo that describes it as a little white town and the view from the long bridge hasnnt changed much from his day.
I am usually dragged down there for an overnight stay during the folk festival that happens every year in August. This year it rained all day the day we went down, but if you like folk music then itts worth it. I unfortunately do not, but sometimes you have to suffer if you love someone!!
The shopping in Bideford is varied. It is great fun wandering around the narrow streets and finding all the smaller quirkier shops still dotted here and there. There is a farmers market and a covered daily market at the top end of town. When you need a break, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes for lunches etc, and some nice pubs if you require a real drink. There is also a town trail which starts at the Victoria park.
The nearest big town would be Barnstaple and I have already reviewed that so go take a look if you want more infoo!
