Kingsbridge is a pretty and busy little place. I last went over there to the farmers market (which is every other saturday) to pick up some goodies. The farmers market has wonderful fresh and local good on offer, and It is about 20 miles from Torbay and has Plymouth to the east so nicely centred for the beautiful South Hams area, which has some of the most gorgeous countryside and scenary that you could ever hope to see. It is a busy market town so not reliant on holiday makers and they have some great unusual business and shops to poke around in. I do not know a lot about the history of Kingsbridge but I do know it was originally on land owned by the Abbot of Buckfast Abbey (not far from here) and he gave his monks permission to sell their home made goods there and that is how the market town started - you can find out more in the really interesting museam which is in the main street, at the top. Lots to see and do here and close to the famous Slapton sands if you want to visit a beach for the day. (Slapton is famous as the place where the Americans practised the D-Day landings and there is still a tank half buried in the sand) There is a real choice of B&Bs and guest houses to stay in so you could base yourself here while exploring the rest of the area.
