When I was young, we lived on a farm near South Molton so I occasionally go back for the day to visit. They have the Quince Honey farm there which is the biggest honey farm in the country and really interesting. And if you donnt come away loaded up with honey and wax candles then you are a stronger person than me!
South Molton is known as the gateway to Exmoor and it is an ancient and small market town, still trading in sheep and cattle that the local farmers bring in. It is a working market and a working town, so most of the holiday visitors are staying there to use it as a base to explore Exmouth and north Devon. Plenty of walkers and ramblers enjoy the Exmoor National Park, and it is famous for the red deer that roam wild and the Exmoor wild ponies.
It is not far from Barnstaple which is another market town, but a lot bigger and with more to do. It has a multiplex cinema and a theatre. The shopping in Barnstaple is varied too, lots of quirky little shops mixing in with the bigger retailers. So based in South Molton, you can get the beautiful feeling of a real market town and explore Exmoor and yet only be approx 20 miles from the city lights.
