Selby is famous for two things - it''s popular Monday market which atrracts shoppers from around the area, and even coach trips, and the Abbey which dominates the town centre, a tourist attraction which was founded in 1069. As well as the market there are two major shopping developments - Abbey Walk and Three Lakes, as well as the shops on the main streets in the town. Trains and buses connect the town with London, Manchester, Leeds, Donacster, Wakefield and, of course, York.

Selby is a small town with plenty to see and do. In the town centre there is a good selection of shops to cover most needs, plenty of banks, bakeries, fruit and veg, stationary shops, jewellers, clothes shops etc. There are some nice cafes and small restaurants to visit all over Selby, a new vibrant one to visit is Frankie and Bennys at the 3 Lakes shopping area. This contains some good large stores such as Argos, Homebase, Pets at Home, Halfords, Aldi. This shopping area is away from the town centre but can still be reached by foot from the centre. When in the town there are some free parking areas such as near Somerfield and Wikinsons. There are plenty of pay and display car parks. A wonderful sight to Selby is the Abbey, this is a beautiful place to visit and an interesting place to see. There is a park nearby which is well looked after, it also contains a mini golf course. Next to that is the main bus station, with frequent buses between York and Doncaster it is easy to access Selby from surrounding towns and villages. There is also a train station with regular trains.
There are many factories that have been there for years such as Rank Hovis and Bowmans which originally used the canal for transport.

I have lived around the Selby area all my life and find it to be improving all the time. The new retail park - 3 Lakes is a welcome addition to the town - there is a MacDonalds, Argos, JJB sports and Aldi.

Selby town centre is known for it''s famous ''Monday market'' which sells everything you could imagine, the Bank holiday market is even bigger and draws in crowds from all over.
The best place to park if you''re only going to be a couple of hours is the Somerfield/Wilkinsons car park which allows 2 hours of free parking. If you are staying longer then the car park next to Morrisons is your best bet.
Shopping in the town centre is not up to much - there is a Woolworths, Boots, New Look, WH smiths and plenty of charity shops. Wetherells is a large department store on 3 floors which has a Dorothy Perkins inside, it also has a large toy shop on the top floor. There is a lovely cafe inside which does get quite busy and is mainly used by the older generation.
In Shops has now closed and is home to ''Home Bargains'' which really is a bargain shop - the only trouble is you go in for a packet of Wet Wipes and end up spending about 20 because there are so many bargains to be had.

There is a hotel/pub just off the bypass called The Wishing Well which is really nice, there is a soft play area inside which is completely free, they also have toddler mornings Tue-Fri which is free with free juice for the kids and free tea/coffee for the parents.

Nightlife is ok but most of the pubs need updating to bring them in line with the wine bars in York & Leeds. Kans is the place to go after midnight but it is very small inside and you do have to queue for ages to get in.
The taxi rank is opposite Kans and there are usuall several taxi''s available until around 2am when you can be queuing. There are also plenty of fast food places available including the famous ''Ashtons'' burger van which is situated outside the Londesbrough Hotel.
