Wellingborough is a town in Northamptonshire, England situated some eleven miles from the county town of Northampton and eight miles south of Kettering. It is twinned with Niort, France and Wittlich, Germany. Recently there has been talk of a new twinning with Mont Sillia in Italy and the population await further developments. The town was founded in the early Saxon period. The name is formed from elements which translate, roughly, as "the town of the people of Waendel", or Waendel-ingas-burgh. Many newcomers to the town mistakenly think that the name comes from the 5 wells that are found around the town (Red Well, Buck Well, Stanwell, Lady''s Well, Whyte Well), which appear on its coat of arms.At one time, the town had four cinemas in the town centre, possibly the largest number of screens per head of population in the country. The Palace (converted from a theatre), The Regal (same management as The Palace), The Silver Cinema and The Lyric (latterly the ABC). The oldest is now a kebab shop, although it still has distinctive pre-war cinema architecture on the first and second floors, and the newest of the three became a supermarket before being demolished in the 1990s to make space for a taxi rank. The Art Deco Lyric was demolished to make way for an Arndale Shopping Centre. The town no longer has a cinema, with the longest lasting one being The Palace, which has now been made into a new Bar named ''The Cutting Room''.The Castle Theatre was opened in 1995 on the site of Wellingborough''s old Cattle Market. It brings not only a theatre to the area but other facilities for local people. Most rooms are used on a daily basis by the local community, users include the Castle Youth Theatre, Youth Dance, Youth Music and the Castle Youth Company and Broadway School of Performing Arts - a Saturday Musical Theatre School (now based at The Masque Theatre, Barton Seagrave.)Following the post war arrival of immigrants from the commonwealth group of nations into Britain, Wellingborough was seen as an attractive location for many who chose to work in the many local industries, most of which are now extinct. A sizeable Black Caribbean and Indian/Pakistani community grew up in this small market town, and now represents well over 10% of the total town population.

Wellingborough is a small town situated approx ten miles from Northampton, there are a wide variety of shops located in the town centre aswell as a number of banks and a diverse selection of places to eat including mcdonalds, the traditional pub, cafes and other worldwide cusines.

Being a market town parking is free in most places including the multi-storey carpark at the swansgate shopping centre and morissons supermarket which is within walking distance of the town centre itself - which is good in these times.

The Swansgate shopping centre, even though it is relatively small offers a wide variety of shops including wilkinsons, argos, boots, superdrug, card shops, a travel agents, a foreign exchange, evans, 99p store, select , dorothy perkins and new look.

A market is held four times a week along pebble lane and the market square behind woolworths and there are themed markets held throughout the year ranging from French to Caribbean. tuesday is a bric-a-brac market with a wide variety of stalls including clothes, ornaments and antiques, tools and diy. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday is a general market with lots of bargains on offer

Also Santa Pod hold the parade of power which has drag cars powering down the streets at night which is well worth seeing.

house prices are relatively good and there are some very nice areas to live and there is easy access to London via rail from wellingborough train station.

the nightlife in Wellingborough is ok, there are a range of pubs catering for a diverse population and a club which pretty much seems to be able to cater for everybody. Northampton and Kettering are within a reasonably priced taxi ride so if you feel the need to venture further out at night it won''t cost the earth to get there

Wellingborough is a relatively small town in central Northamptonshire. It is easily accessible too so makes it extremely easy to get to from other neighbouring towns and villages. Wellingborough has a nice mix of shopping available in the town centre for a smaller town and a large busy market. There is a nice mix of pubs & clubs too for those wanting a bit of excitement in the evenings. I gave it a neutral rating as I lived here for a while and although it was an ok place to live I didn''t find it had really anything special enough about it to make me stay.
