Berwick-Upon-Tweed is a lovely town about an hour or so from Newcastle. It''s right on the borders of Scotland and so you may end up dealing with scottish bank notes (which won''t make you popular when you get home if you live in some parts of England and Wales). It has a great train station and an excellent central shopping area. The atmosphere is Berwick was lovely when I last visited (which was just over a week ago).
