Hay on Wye. The place of books. and books. and more books, in fact, if books is your love, you may already know about Hay!
Great place. Full of book shops, book stalls, o.k ,enough about the books. Did I mention it also has a book festival in summer???
Great place. Especially when the festival is on, as the whole area takes on a carnival atmosphere, the church halls open up as tea rooms. You can get organic smoothies from people who have set up stalls in their gardens! and fruit teas, and a stop and chat to all visitors who eek a sense of literary lovlieness. We have spotted a fair few famous people during the festival time, but they cannot overshadow the lovely welcome given by Hay locals:)
Best place to park your vehicle is down past the tourist centre at the end of town. though it''s a bit of an incline back up to the town. To be honest We had a child in a pushchair and it was quite awkward to navigate the streets during busy times.Access to some of the older Book shops were not possible either, however if you wanted something specific Staff were helpful enough. This misses the point really. I like to browse book shops, pick up old books, sniff them (I know!) So in reality leave your child with a kindly aunt or nanny . Hay needs to be exprienced slowly.
