Telford is a New Town, formed over twenty five years ago by drawing a ring round the existing towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Donnington, Dawley, Madeley and Ironbridge, together with a lot of smaller villages, and filling in the gaps. It is, in my opinion as an incomer, a successful example of a developed New Town on the whole, although some people, especially residents who lived in the country where parts of Telford now are, would not agree. It has a population of over 125,000,making it easily the largest place in the rural county of Shropshire; in 1998, though, it ceased to part of Shropshire administratively and became Telford and Wrekin Unitary Authority. It has attracted a lot of high-tech Japanese and Taiwanese firms - Epson, Makita, NEC, Ricoh are examples - and people have moved here from all over the country in search of employment, with this much success, that unemployment here at the worst times has not been as bad as elsewhere in the industrial West Midlands.
Telford is named after Thomas Telford, engineer and architect. With its origins in the first Industrial Revolution and its name reflecting British endeavour, it is proud, now, to be at the forefront of the Information Age, which some have called the Second Industrial Revolution.

Ironbridge,telford
The area around Ironbridge is described as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution" The worlds first iron bridge was built in Ironbridge in 1779 and still stands testament to his industry.Ironbridge has become a major tourist attraction within Shropshire. Most industries in Ironbridge are now tourist related. Amongst other things, the village is still host to a post office, pharmacy, various pubs, and many many lovely little cafes and many successful small shops selling all kinds of nicnacs etc. quite near to ironbridge is the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, Blists hill Museum which is a victorian museum and the victorian industry is brought bang up date at Enginuity, their newest mueseum. Here you get to ply with an incredible collection of interactive machinery and a vast array of activities including testing your speed and accuracy against a robot; generating power from water; pulling a locomotive by hand. There''s even stuff to keep the kids amused while you''re doing it.so there seems always something to keep you busy in Iron bridge. There is also lots of places to stay in ironbridge such as bed and breakfast, hotels, guesthouse , self catering and caravan or camping accommodation both within the town and surrounding countryside.

My dad used to live in telford so i was always visiting him he used to take us to the ice rink which was a great afternoon, when we came out we would sometimes go on the pedal boats on a sunny afternoon. The bowling alley was closed for quite a few years but opened around about 6 years ago Not a very big place but if you book in advance you are sure to get a place. The park is nice for kids of all ages. All this is just out side the entrance from the shopping centre so once the kids start getting bored you just take them for a run around. There is many shops in the centre from woolworths, primark, marks and spencers , a few sports shop and high street clothes shop''s, A few miles up the road in Horsehay and dawley There is telford steam train which is a nice day out . Last christmas we took our son to see thomas the tank engine he loved it and after we went on thomas we went to santa''s grotto and he had lots of thomas goodies. Its all easy to get to and there is plenty of parking spaces

Telford is a clean and respectable place with many big name shops, a cinema, bowling alley and an ice rink. There is also the Wonderland and a park for the children, which although the Wonderland is a little expensive, is good fun for the kids with activities taking place (i.e. clown show!). The shopping centre is large, never too over-crowded and has wide selection of big name shops (i.e. Topshop/man, River Island/ JD Sports/Boots/Primark) and it is well maintained. There are always parking spaces to choose from in each of the many car parks. The cinema always has a decent selection of the latest films and is also kept clean and tidy. Telford is easily accessible from the M54 motorway and has a train station a few minutes walk away from the main shopping centre. Telford also has a few retail parks with some big outlet stores in which to shop. There is also a McDonalds outside of the main shopping centre which is handy, as you don''t have to pay for parking and it has a drive thru, and ironically there is a large health and fitness centre right next door!! Always a bonus.

Telford is a large town made up of several villages. There are some very nice places to visit nearby such as Ironbridge. Other places are rather easy to get to as well as there are planty of buses and trains throughout the day. Also, if you need help with your travel (times etc) then there is a very handy booth in the bus station where a member of staff gives you information. It can prove very handy when you need a train and you don''''t know how long you have to eat etc. When you travel a lot it''''s important to have such good advice. There is a cinema very close to the shopping center and Spencers Mall has some very handy items and services. The town centre is soon to be updated and when finished it will be able to be seen from the M54. It should be a very impressive landmark and will be a lot more of a draw for shoppers. The town does have its strange people but it''''s not a bad place to be. It''''s very pretty in some places too. There are quite a lot of jobs in Telford too so if you need work you can usually find it quite easily.
