Wem is what "our friends across the water" would define as "Quaint".
Numerous small specialty shops stocked to the gunn''els and bursting with delights. An old fashioned iron mongers that sells everything! Wem also has one of Shropshire''s best delicatessen and that''s a reference in itself.
To help you re-live your childhood, pop in to the "Treacle Mine", a truly traditional sweet shop - Remember Pear Drops, Gobstoppers, Nut Brittle and Bonfire Toffee?...yum yum i loved pear drops when i was pregnant and this shop was fab !!!!Wem is full of really friendly people which i think is because of the pace of life there are also loads of pubs where there is a wide choice in drink making it a great place for a night out. Also every year there is a Sweet Pea Festival which draws admirers from around . Apart from the most hardened fanatics, many go on to visit the grand gardens and other floral attractions that make Shropshire one of the most fragrant counties of England.

I stayed in Wem for a weekend whilst staying with a uni friend for her birthday. Its a small town with a village feel (ie everyone knows each other). Theres a new large Tesco store nearby which is convinient for residents who have a car. In the town theres lots of housing, some quite affordable, and several pubs. I visited the fox, which was lively on a friday night with all the local young people. Drinks were reasonable for the area and it had a good atmosphere. Near Wem there are several Gastro type pubs offering nice upmarket pub type food. Theres a school and a park in Wem, theres also a pretty church which offers regular services. There are several convenience stores in Wem, and its a lovely town offering great access to the countryside. We went on a walk around a lake near Wem and it was beautiful. I would recommend it to stay in if you know someone there to get the full appreciation of this small but fun town.
