I first went to Wincanton when I was a kid. I belonged to a church youth club and we stayed in King Arthurs school in Wincanton 2 years in a row with about another 100 kids from other groups for 4 nights and went to the cheddar Gorge (which isn''t too far away) and visited all the local churches etc for headstone rubbings. The sun seemed to shine all the time so I have happy memories of it. It used to be a main coaching town as it is on the route between Plymouth and London.
However, visiting as an adult is a different affair. No, the sun doesnnt always shine and Wincanton is a lot smaller than I remember! The racing track is still there and the huge factory that makes cheese for a well known brand still smells when you drive past! The town is about 30 miles from Taunton which I guess would be the nearest big shopping centre. I think Taunton would be the nearest train station too, though Wincanton is on the main A303 so is easy to get to by road. There are still old coaching houses in the town.
Wincanton town centre is fairly small, the sweetie shop I remembered, is long gone of course. The museum is still there and was well worth a visit. A lot of the buildings date back to the 18th century which is interesting. The post Office is a lovely building which looks out onto Market Square. At the other end of the scale I noticed a skate park/ramp thing outside Morrisons for the copious amount of teenagers hanging around

I''m not that keen on Wincanton. It has a structure to the town which I never like which is the centre of it being the high street where the cars go. It''s not that pretty and has a quite gloomy feel to it. Everywhere feels a bit dead, if I remember correctly my friend called it "god''s waiting room". a small library, a couple of pubs and few shops. Wouldn''t really bother going.
