cumbernauld started as a new town in the north of lanarkshire. its industrial history includes quarrying, mining and weaving. it became a new town as there was a shortage of housing available in glasgow. as a result of this there is a lot of buildings this had lead to the town being given names such as the plook on a plinth not very flattering at all. it has its own football teams a junior called cumbernauld united and the more commonly known clyde who play at broadwood stadium. other sports include swimming and gymnastics. access is good by road bus and car and railway. the station is located to the north of the town. the shops are viable for the local community but i would not say cumbenauld is really a tourist attraction other than for those going to visit friends and relatives.
I''m from the wonder that is Cumbernauld. I grew up there - then left when i could. Cumbernauld is a town about 20 miles to the east of Glasgow and is ever expanding with new housing being built all the time. The infamous town centre is in the middle of it all. For those that don''t know the Town Centre building is a monstrosity from the 60''s which contains a mere handful of shops and still stands despite many a person wanting it bulldozed (it even got featured in a programme by Channel 4 for precisely this reason). There is now a new town centre next to the old one but still this is not full. Cumbernauld was designed to be a utopia where families could live, work and shop and never have to cross a roads thanks to a series of underpasses and footbridges. A nice idea but in practice it wasn''t maintained. It is a nice place for families to live - close to amenities such as the big supermarkets, sport centre, parks, local golf courses and good schools. however there is not much for the teenagers to do and the town suffers because of this. Many of the peers at school quickly left the town in search of something better. for a town its size, there is no proper cinema - the theatre occasionally shows some films. the teenagers and young people definitely are not catered to resulting in a lot of teenage drinking and yob culture which is a shame for the younger families who are probably better catered for.
