Lanark is situated in the Clyde valley and has many positives but also many negatives. It is an area which is worth a visit if your anywhere near but not somewhere to base a whole holiday on. It is a small town which is surrounded on all sides by beautiful country side, the clyde valley and new lanark are really worth a visit. It has a small number of shops on the main street, mainly catering to the house market and definately not somewhere to go clothes shopping. Lanark has a good number of small cafe''s most of which are really friendly and good value. A recent development in the old market is a retail outlet which plays host to a number of shops including homebase, acorn pets and watt brothers and is a good place to get little bits and bobs. Lanark market has now moved to just up the road from the old site and now hosts a farmers market on a monday (which is great for your fruit and veg) and a car boot sale on a sunday which runs all year round and as its indoors is a great place to spend a sunday morning looking for bargains. Lanark Loch is a nice little walk although you are likely to be attacked by the many hungry swans who all expect to be feed and dont like it if they arent!! The play park used to be a place where everyone took their children but now the main play equipment has been taken away and there really isnt enough to occupy children now, as yet the council dont know when they are replacing the equipment. There is a lovely little resturant on the loch which offers a lovely evening menu and great rolls etc for lunch, well worth a visit if you go to the loch.
During november (15th this year) lanark main street is shut off for the christmas market which is the best thing that happens in lanark, it is where you can do some christmas shopping if not all your shopping and the children can go on the fair rides and meet santa. One thing is it gets extremely busy and definately worth going early or getting a bus into town.
The housing in lanark varies as is does everywhere, you have some really nice cottages and some huge houses but in the schemes the houses are really close together and seems very closed in. House prices in lanark are quite high although lower than the average, but you are really just paying for the location and not the property.

Lanark started its life as a market town, there is still an auction house which is very popular with the faming community located just outside the shopping centre near the retail park that has au natural, homebase, pet shop and vaious others. lanark is also famous for having willaim wallace to some you will know him as BRAVEHEART! residing here. there a few tributes to him located within lanark. Lanark has a variety of shops on one street including a smaller boots, a gregs which i frequent when i go, a clintons and wh smith, woolworths and various other shops. there is a lot to do in lanark from lanark park which has a large loch which is also used as a boating pond. you can walk round the loch don''t be put off by the size its a nice walk. there is a play area for the children and if you get hungry there is a hotel were you can enjoy a bar meal looking out onto the loch. the ice cream vans are occasionally there and that always helps get us walking!!
