This is written by an outsider - so forgive me if you don't agree! Surrey is difficult to put into a box - there are so many aspects to it, from the London hinterland, a sort of Metroland of suburb upon suburb with few distinguishing features, then there's Guildford with its awful cathedral and nightmare road system. At last there's 'real' Surrey. The likes of Compton and Holmbury St Mary, where a human being might want to live - easily commutable, but architectually sympathetic. All I would say is "Persevere'. There are some lovely parts of Surrey, landscape and townscape.
Some might argue that my opinion is rather biased but having lived and grown up in Surrey for over 15 years, I have to say that I really do love it. It has everything that you could ever want from a county in terms of desirable places to live. Firstly it is a home county making it very accessible in getting around if its into the centre of London which only takes 30 minutes or to all around the world as both Gatwick and Heathrow are within 30 minute's drive. It has a number of major towns in it including Guildford (the capital) which has an excellent University and cathedral. Other major towns include Ewell, Epsom, Redhill and Farnham. The excellent Royal Holloway University is also situated in Surrey which is one of the top Universities in the country. Along with this, there are also a fantastic number of top schools including Epsom College, Cranleigh, St. George's College and Tormead. There is so many things to do in Surrey with beautiful landscapes such as Boxhill, Devil's punch bowl, Wisley and the Claremont landscape gardens. It also contains Sandown Race Course and Wimbledon Tennis Club. Of course, you have to mention the one and only Thorpe Park! All in all this is a great county which oodles character and is a pleasure to live in.
