Dorking is a big town in Surrey, one of the home counties which means that it is in a great location in terms of commuting to central London or getting to either London Gatwick or London Heathrow airport. The main reason I ever visit Dorking is for its countryside and natural beauty which really is spectacular. It is a vibrant community which a strong sense of history and tradition. Highlights of the town include excellent food and drink, architecture and heritage, antiques and of course, shopping. Another reason Dorking is famous is for its festivals of the visual arts, music and literature which offers something for all tastes and providing an added reason for visitors to come here.
If you are an antiques lover then you will have heard of West Street as it is an antiques haven. The street has a long history and is rumoured to be hte oldest in the town and appropriately the home of the Dorking museum. If you are looking for a unique antique or vintage piece then this is the street to find it. There are 100 antique dealers in 22 antique shops just in this street which really is quite remarkable. They are also loads of lovely inns and pubs along this street so you can easily take a break as well!
Dorking is also famous for its food and drink with loads of gorgeous local markets selling fresh meats, vegetables and other goodies. It is impossible to name all the good cafe's, restaurants and take aways in this lovely town as there are just so many.
So far you might be thinking that all of Dorking's attractions sound like they are for old people but that is not entirely true. The Dorking Halls is a cinema, theatre, leisure centre and a swimming pool complex. The town also has an active collection of sports clubs. The Dorking Caves are another attraction which draws many. A great town.
