Pontefract is locally renowned for its large number of pubs. One of the oldest buildings, dating from the 16th century and previously used as a shop, was turned into a pub in the 1980s, called the Counting House.
Pontefract''s deep, sandy soil makes it one of the few British places in which liquorice can be successfully grown. The town has a liquorice-sweet industry; and the famous Pontefract Cakes are still produced, though the liquorice plant itself is no longer grown there. The town''s two liquorice factories are owned by Haribo and Monkhill Confectionery. A Liquorice Festival is held each year. Close by is the large, coal-fired power station at Ferrybridge. There are Tesco and Morrisons supermarkets, and most recently Asda, which changed hands from Kwik Save. The schools in the town are Carleton Community High School, in Carleton, and The King''s School, on Mill Hill Lane; both are comprehensive schools, for ages 11116.
Pontefract is known for its ''down-to-earth'' nightlife, sporting one of the most concentrated numbers of public houses in the UK, with such venues as Kikos, on Front Street, Big Fellas, on Beastfair, Bar Wrapid, The Counting House, The Elephant, Bar Liquid, The Green Dragon, The Tap and Barrel, The Malt Shovel, and The Blackmoor Head .

There is the Haribo factory and Haribo sweet shop (fantastically cheap for christmas presents) There is pontefract castle which is nice to walk around. Kikos night club, and many other places to eat and drink. theres the race course and a big park. Pontefract New College, is a nice big college offering a wide range of subjects!

Pontefract is a small market town in West Yorkshire. I live about 10 miles so come here quite frequently. There is a small shopping park near the racecourse which has a Wickes, Tiles R Us, Currys and a large Halfords which is worth visiting.
The racecourse itself is a great day out and even when the races are not on you can still visit to have a walk round the duck pond which is great for the kids, there''s loads of grass for them to burn off some energy!
The Haribo factory have a shop selling seconds (usually just damaged packaging) at a fraction of the price. The shop is open to the public and I would really recommend visiting here if you have a sweet tooth, epecially if you like pontefract cakes!
I find the best place to park is in the Tesco car park which is pay and display, then you walk through Tesco and out the other side where you will find all the shops - New Look, Dorothy perkins, etc
Pontefract is a lovely little town and has quite a good nightlife aswell - there are some nice restaurants to eat in, especially curry houses.

Pontefract is a busy small town with lots to see and do. The town centre contains a good selection of shops such as Dorothy Perkins, Woolworths, H Samuel, many banks, bakeries, travel agents etc. There is also a wonderful indoor market containing stalls such as fruit and veg, butchers, health food, greeting cards. The famous liquorice festival occurs once a year with many events through the town streets and lots of entertainment. There are lovely places to visit such as the remains of Pontefract Castle. The Pontefract racecourse can offer a nice relaxing walk round, there is also a small lake with ducks and a small park for the children. There is a few small shopping areas to visit on the outskirts of the town. An exciting place to visit is Xscape which contains so many things to see and do such as a real snow ski slope, cinema, bowling, indoor golf, kids soft play centre, restaurants, bars, climbing wall. Next to Xscape over the road is a large shopping outlet, all outdoor but with shelter around all the shops, so many exciting shops to choose from and lots of bargains to be found.

i live just 2 minutes away from pontefract, and i still think pontefract is a great litte town, there is plenty to do in this area, with the castle and museum. the shopping is great, there is 4 supermarkets within around 5minutes of each other. Pontefract racecourse has plenty to offer every age group, they have days where all the family can go and they have a fair and cicus etc. just outside of pontefract in castleford you find junction 32 or otherwise known as freeport, which is a great shopping outlet with lots of bargains to be found, then you have the xscape which is popular with lots of people. lots to do inside like snowboarding, bowling, cinemas, kids soft play area and shops. this is a great place to visit and my daughter will be going for her 9th birthday as she wants to go on the climbing wall which looks like lots of fun. Pontefract is a very popular tourist attraction and in the town centre once a year they have a liquerice festival, as there is a haribo factory 2 minutes from the town centre. this is great fun and has a lot of great things to do. for a little mining town the people area all so friendly and this is a great place to go

Pontefract is a small town in West Yorkshire. I visited earlier this year when I went up to see a friend who lives there. Unfortunately for me it was raining rather heavily and so I only got to see a small part of Pontefract. The place is full of hills and with the rain, we would have been better in a submarine than a car! The puddles were like lakes!! Pontefract has some lovely places to visit if you fancy a bit of historical sightseeing. There is Pontefract Castle which is lovely and the remains of the castle, and the underground magazine chamber, are open to visitors. There is also a working blacksmith on site. The cellars of the 11th-century great hall were used as a magazine (military store) from medieval times through to the English Civil War period. You can visit the underground magazine cut out of the solid rock and see where Civil War prisoners carved their names into the cell walls. Its definitely worth a visit if you are interested in history. Pontefract Market place is not very big but is very nice and there are some good shops. It''s very tidy and clean and all in all very pleasant. I think it would make a really nice place to live and I will definitely enjoy visiting again.
