Wiltshire is one of the least populated counties in Britain, which means it has loads of amazingly beautiful rolling countryside with hills and fields that are completely untouched by people. It is also home to a huge amount of historical monuments from the Neolithic, such as Stonehenge at Amesbury and the Avebury stone circles, and hundreds of Neolithic Long Barrows. Other monuments include West-Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill. All of these places are quite close together and can make for a great day out around the county. There are lots of pretty little villages around the county, which make from great visits and walks. As well as amazing country side and historic sites, there are several towns and cities, such as Salisbury which has an amazing cathedral which started being build in the 13th Century and has several art galleries. Swindon is also located to the north of the county and has a great nightlife.
Wiltshire is situated in the south-west of England and is bordered by Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. It is famous for Stonehenge stone circle situated on the Salisbury Plains. It is also situated close to the historic city of Bath only a 10minute train ride from Chippenham in the North west of Wiltshire. Wiltshire is a mostly rural landscape, two thirds of the county lying on chalk, with Cherhills white horse being a very popular place for keen hikers. Between the areas of chalk and limestone downland are clay valleys and vales. The largest of these vales is the Avon Vale. The Avon cuts diagonally through the north of the county, flowing through Bradford on Avon and into Bath and Bristol. The M4 motorway connecting London to Bristol runs straight through the North of Wiltshire, which attracts buisnesses and hence helps feed the economy. The main towns include Swindon, Melksham, Salisbury, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Calne, Devises, Westbury, Wootton Bassett and Marlborough. Beautiful villages are scattered about Wiltshire with the famous Lacock (Harry Potter was filmed in the Abbey Courtyard and in the streets!) and Castle Coombe (recently starred in "Stardust" and featured in the old Doctor Dolittle series). I have lived in this beautiful scenic county for 19 years and the only thing i would change about it would be to be closer to the beach- nearest coastline is Weston Super Mare which is definatly not the best place for a swim!
