Chippenham was established over the river Avon, it began as a market town stop off point for travellers heading from London to Bristol, and grew in 1841 with the arrival of the great western railway to a commuter town. Chippenham is twinned with La Fleche in France and Friedberg in Germany. The town motto is "Unity and Loyalty". Which is used by Sheldon (1 of 3 secondary schools in chippenham) as their motto. Sheldon is a beacon school which shares its playing field with Hardenhuish. (about 40 years ago Hardenhuish was an all girls school and Sheldon was an all boys school). The other secondary school Abbeyfield has only recently been constructed in the last 10 years and is situated near Pewsham. Chippenham has one main high street with Borough Parade and Emery gate stemming off it, there are a few free car parks for the first 2 hours but these are usually full up (especially on the weekend). It has a range of shops from New Look, to Argos, to Wilkinsons, to Dorothy Perkins. It has a lot of pubs scattered about town and within residential areas but it has only 2 clubs, recently opened e11evens and Buds 2000. Chippenhams residential areas are divided into Cepen Park North (situated near the schools and Morrisons) and South (situated near Sainsburys), Monkton Park (near the Olympiad) and the fairly newly constructed Pewsham in-between Dairy Hill and Chippenham Town centre. The location of Chippenham is fantastic with it being right on the M4 so only 20minutes from Bath, 40minutes from Bristol and 1hour and a half from London. It is a very touristy area being near to Bowood House, Lacock and Castle Coombe.
